Compost or biological preconditioning is effective ways for the recover and resource of municipal solid waste. However, large amount of odor gases is often released during the process and cause serious nuisance problem in the nearby area. The target pollutant of this paper is the odor gases released from the first separation screen of the first phase fermented municipal solid waste in Shanghai Meishang biology Hi-Tech Environmental Protecion Co., Ltd. The odor gases released rate along the screen process line is investigated, three kinds of absorbent for odor gas scrubbing were compared. Then, the bench scale experiment of biofilter integrated with scrubbing for the control of the odor gas was conducted, and final the full scale pilot experiment of the developed odor control process was carried out. The cost-effectiveness analysis of the developed process was performed based on Shanghai Meishang' condition. The result indicated that:In the separation section of first phase ferment solid wastes, the emission rate of odor gases is decreased along the production line and the highest emission rate point is the first separation screen, where the odor gas concentration of total volatility organic compounds (measured with isobutene) is higher than 300mg/m~3 sometimes and the mean value is 80~176mg/m~3 in daily average. The concentration of total volatility organics (measured as isobutene) above the conveyor belt is decreased in downtrend from the first to the last screen, the range is from 66.7mg/m~3 to 15.7mg/m~3. The rise velocity of odor gases above the conveyor belt is varied in the same way, and the mean value is about 0.21m/s. The odor gas released rate of the ferment solid waste is increased with the increasing of ventilation, and tend to a limitation value, while the concentration of the odor gas is decreased and tend to a limitation value too. The result of comparison test of three different absorbent indicated that: the active sludge is the best absorbent, the scrubbing efficiency of that absorbent for total volatility organic compounds is 46.2% when the superficial velocity is 1m/s. The biofilter packed with the mixture of mature compost from the Meishang and the woodchip from the solid waste showed good performance on both odor removal efficiency and pressure drop. The removal efficiency can reach 85.8% with 0.04m/s superficial velocity. The results of 7000-10000m~3/h field experiment indicated that: The developed process and facility has more than 85% removal efficiency for the odor gases released from the first screen and the discharge gases can meet the demands of GB14554-93.The preliminary economic analysis shown that: If the developed odor removal process is applied in Shanghai Meishang, the odor gases treatment cost is 1.8 yuan per 1000m~3 which will be a increase of 17.2 yuan in 1 ton solid waste' processing.
