With the entrance to 21st century, the resource and environment problems have become the principle problems in the sustainable development of human beings. Therefore the trends of the industrial development all over the world can be reduced to the saving of energy and resource, what is more, the pursuit of natural productions. The study and development on light castings has been an important research field and developing direction, with the rapid development of automotive industry.Magnesium alloys are the lightest structural metal alloys, which have many excellent and unique properties, such as low density, high specific strength and stiffness, good damping and shock absorption, easy processing and castability, high heat and electrical conductivity, excellent electromagnetic shielding capability,as well as a good recovery capability, etc. So more and more magnesium alloy products have been used in automotive, communication apparatus and aerospace industries.Consequently , it is considered that magnesium alloys are the most worthy and exploitative"natural engineering materials"with greatly potential application in the century.Deformation magnesium alloy is applied on extensive area, such as electron, conmmunation, aviation, information, traffic and so on.But,so far,The appliation of magnesium alloy still has big limitation.Compare with aluminium and couper alloy,The yield and useness of it is less. The reasons that the development of magnesium alloy is limited are as follow:firstly, the shape deformation abillity of most magnesium alloy is low, secondly, the production craft develop slowly, the mechanical properties of alloy need improvaion.so it is necessary to konw the production process and the transformation law of the microstructure and mechanical properties for develping the deformation technique. At first, the composition and the phase component of the AM60-xY as cast alloys were determined by EDS and the XRD analysis, and then the microstructure was studied. The phase analysis indicated that AM60 and AM60—xY as cast alloys consist of the substrateα-Mg solid solution and strengthened Mg17Al12 phase.AM60—xY as cast alloy consists ofα-Mg,Mg17Al12 and the unknown phase which contain Al,Y element. The mechanical properties of the as cast AM60—xY alloys were studied. The ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation to failure of the as cast AM60—xY alloy were higher than AM60,which reveals excellent mechanical properties. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the hot rolled AM60—xY alloys on different deformation situation were studied. The ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of the rolled AM60—xY alloy increase rapidly.exspecially AM60—0.9Y alloy. But the elongation decrease remarkbaly which reveals excellent mechanical properties. What's more,The mechanical performance and fracture characteristic was analyzed, simultaneously the explanation of strengthening mechanism of the alloys was made.At last,The microstructure and mechanical properties of the hot rolled AM60—xY alloys on different annealing situation were studied. The higher temperature is,the longer time is.the lower ultimate tensile strength, yield strength is,the higher elongation is.
