The polyamidine is a cationic polymer with higher density of positive charge, nice solubility in aqueous medium. In this paper, the aqueous solution polymerization and the inverse emulsion polymerization were studied. The effects of polymerization items for the intermediate such as the reaction temperature, time, the dosage of initiator and ratio of the monomers on the charge density and the intrinsic viscosity of the polyamidines were researched. The amidinization temperature for the intermediate and time were also studied too. Comparing with that of the aqueous solution polymerization, the polyamidine from the inverse emulsion polymerization had higher charge density and better solubility in water. The property of the polyamidine of the reduced viscosity and charge density were studied. The co-polymer and polyamidine was characterized by FT-IR and UV. The colloidal equivalent value, the viscosity and flocculating properties of polyamidine was determined. We found charge density decreases with the increase of polyamidine solution pH value.The application of polyamidine on the flocculation treatment of sewage, sludge dewatering and oil water separation of waste water from oil exploration were studied.When the pH value of sewage was greater than 7.0,the polyamidine had obvious treatment efficiency. But the CODCr for the treated sewage is the best between 5.0 and 7.0.With increasing amount of polyamidine,the time of sludge dewatering and the water content of the filter cake decreased.The waste water of tertiary oil recovery could be treated by polyamidine,and the floc bulk was small.
