The relief effects of the Salicylic acid(SA) to the damage of Vicia faba Linn. produced by heavy metals Cd2+ were measured by micronucleus methods. The results showed obvious damage to the growth of V. faba L. by the heavy metal ion of Cadmium. The mitotic index declined, chromosomal aberrations(%)and frequency of micronucleus ascended with the concentration of Cd2+ increased in root tip cells of V. faba L. . Resistance ability from endogenous protective enzyme systems and antioxidant substance content in the plants were enhanced by the inducement of heavy metal stress in a restricted range, While defence reaction crippled as the aggravation of the injury.Salicylic acid could relieve this damage and advance growth. The effects of treatment by affiliate salicylic acid to mitosis, frequency of micronucleus, frequency of chromosome aberrance and growth of V. faba L. root tip cells were evaluated. The results showed that lower concentration of salicylic acid could promote the growth of V. faba L. root, which damaged by Cd2+, the mitotic index ascended, chromosomal aberrations(%)and frequency of micronucleus declined notablely, when the salicylic acid concentration was 1.00 mmol/L, the relief effects was best, but when the salicylic acid concentration was higher than 1.00 mmol/L, the relief effect weakened, and SA even inhibits the growth of V. faba L. root. It showed that the the relief effects of the salicylic acid to the damage of V. faba L. produced by heavy metals Cd2+ is restricted by the concentration of salicylic acid: lower concentration can promote the growth while high concentration can even leads to apoptosis.
