In this thesis, composite TiO2-ZrO2 oxides were synthesized by sol-precipitationmethod and homogenous coprecipitation method. These TiO2-ZrO2 oxides werecharacterized by FT-IR, DTA, TG, FT-Raman and XRD. An impregnation method wasemployed to prepare copper-base catalysts supported on different compositeTiO2-ZrO2 oxides useful for hydrogenation of furfural to furfural alcohol. The loadingamount of promoters, calcination temperature of supports and catalysts, solvents weresystematically varied to optimize the CuO /TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts. Preparation andproperties of CuO/La2O3 catalysts were initially investigated. The results of FT-IR, FT-Raman, DTA, TG and XRD indicated that thecomposite TiO2-ZrO2 oxides synthesized by sol-precipitation method andhomogenous coprecipitation method were all amorphous compounds. Theseamorphous compounds, which the temperature of crystal transformation was over 700℃, had high thermal stability.CuO/TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts modified by La, Ni were investigated. The reductionof catalysts and the effects of promoter for reduction of catalysts were characterizedby TPR, FT-IR and XRD. The results of analysis showed that CuO dispersed highlyon the support. CuO dispersion on the surface of support was promoted by La and/orNi. The CuO and support existed as amorphous. The strong interaction between CuOand support changed the amount and strength of surface hydroxyl on catalysts to formmore acid and alkali active sites. The activity of catalysts with bicomponentpromoters, because of their synergetic effect each other, was higher than the catalystswith single component promoter. The results of process conditions of catalysts preparation showed that theoptimum preparation conditions were: the Cu loading amount=12%wt., the molarratio of Cu to promoter=5:1, the calcination temperature of support=550℃, thecalcination temperature of catalysts=500℃.The catalytic activities of copper-base catalysts supported on compositeTiO2-ZrO2 oxides for hydrogenation of furfural to furfural alcohol were evaluated. The results showed that the yield of furfural alcohol reached up to 83.0%with thecatalyst 0.2CLN-1#-2 after reaction 2 hours, and the yield of furfural alcohol was75.8%with the catalyst 0.2CLN-3# after reaction 2 hours. The effect of various reaction parameters such as reaction temperature, spacevelocity and the ratio of hydrogen to aldehyde were investigated. The optimumconditions of reaction were: the reaction temperature=180℃, the space velocity=0.12h-1, the ratio of hydrogen to aldehyde=8:1.La2O3 support was prepared by coprecipitation using urotropine as theprecipitator. The FT-IR, XRD and TEM characterization results indicated that thenanorod of La2O3 belongs to monoclinic form. The experiment results showed that theactivities of nanorod La2O3 supported copper catalysts without promoter was higherthan the TiO2-ZrO2 supported copper catalyst without promoter.
