Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate (EVA) copolymers are extensively used in many fields, especially in the cable industry as excellent insulating materials with good physical and mechanical properties. However, EVA copolymers are particularly flammable and can emit a large amount of poisonous gases while burning, which restrict their practical applications. Therefore, it is very important to improve the flame retardance and reduce the emissions of smoke and poisonous gases in the applications of EVA materials. The thesis consists of two parts as follows:Part I : ReviewIt looks back to the development of the halogen-free flame retardants from the view of three aspects such as the sorts, the burning mechanism and the development trend of the halogen-free fire retardant EVA. The importance and necessity of the halogen-free fire retardants were given in this part. The main application of these flame retardant reagents was emphasized, too. As a kind of new flame retardantr, their prospect and the problems were also discussed in this part.Part II: EVA/ palygorskite flame retardant compositesIn this part, the EVA/ palygorskite flame retardant composites were prepared using palygorskite as part of the flame retardant reagent through the addition of ammonium polyphosphate, hydroxid, and expanded graphite. According to LOI and UL-94 standard studies, EVA composite belongs to excellent flame retardant material. The materials were characterized by TEM and TG. The tensile strength investigation indicated that the composite has better physical and mechanical properties by the surface modification. The composite meets the demand for the utilization as cable material and has the potential applications in industry.
