A fire sometimes causes great damage to human beings society and nature. Heat release rate (HRR) is an important parameter to describe a fire process. Amount of energy released from a fire can be pictured with heat release rate. Heat release rate is a basic parameter to decide fire growing and fire hazard. Heat release rate is a foundational data in fire study, fire size and velocity of fire growing can be described with it. Amount of energy released from burning material in fire condition can be pictured with heat release rate. According to data of heat release rate, grade of fire-retardant building material can be classified. The grade of fire-retardant building material is very important in fire protection design and fire hazard assessment. Experiment is basic method to gained heat release rate of combustible material, and large scale experiment is effective means to gained heat release rate of a fire scenario.Firstly, different methods of measuring heat release rate were summarized from lots of documents, and the method of measuring heat release rate based on oxygen consumption was elaborated in more detail. Secondly, ISO9705 room fire test platform was built. The component, measuring system, and system software of the platform were introduced and analyzed. Lastly, a series of testes were done in the measuring heat release rate platform. These testes include fire retardants affecting material's heat release rate, heat release rate of gasoline pool fire acting with water mist, heat release rate of office furniture, and efficiency of fire fighting with three different methods to fight office furniture fire. The test scheme was formed, experimental datum were analyzed, and conclusions corresponding each group test were found.Experimental studies show that ISO9705 room fire heat release rate test system is a large-scale multi-function experimental platform, and combustion in ISO9705 fire room can form a room fire scenario. Heat release rate of a room fire scenario can be measured with the platform. At the same time, other character parameters of fire can be gained. Comparing experimental datum acquired from ISO9705 platform with small-scale fire test, the former can reflect combustible behavior in actual fire scenario. When grade of fire-retardant building material is classified, more scientific evidences can be provided from ISO9705 room fire test. The efficiency of different fire fighting method fighting specified fire scenario can be given quantitatively. The experimental datum from ISO9705 fire test platform can provide scientific evidence for fire performance design and fire hazard assessment.
