Based on the review of the recent development of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), two kinds of novel dual-layer SAMs and ultra-thin polymer brushes films as potential lubricants for the micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) or nano electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) were designed and prepared on single crystal silicon surface. The tribological properties of as-prepared films were investigated. The main contents are listed as follows:1. Dual-layer SAMs film of stearic acid (STA) and octadecylamine (OTA) molecules on (3-Glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane(GPS) coating (STA-GPS and OTA-GPS) were prepared on silicon wafer. Both dual-layer SAMs could greatly reduce friction coefficient and possessed better load-carrying capacity and antiwear ability than the GPS-SAMs, which was ascribed to their different chemical compositions and layered structures as well as possible the interchain hydrogen bonds between the assembled molecules.2. Methyl methacrylate(PMMA) polymer brushes were prepared on silicon surface in a controlled fashion by surface initiated atomic transfer radical polymer ization(ATRP) to modify the physical and chemical properties of silicon surface and to bestow good tribological properties.
