In-plane bending process of strip metal under unequal compressing is an advanced plastic forming technology using the unequal plastic deformation and developing the forming potential of materials adequately with high efficiency, good quality, low consumption, specific theoretical value and wide application foreground. The incremental in-plane bending is one of in-plane bending processes, and it is a free forging process accomplishing in-plane bending process by beating the metal strip partly with the punch incrementally. Incremental in-plane bending process is researched systematically through the combination of FEM simulation and theoretical analysis in this paper. The main contents and results are as follows:(1) The approximate calculation formula of bending radius of incremental in-plane bending is deduced based on the assumption of plane strain theory. The formulas of Inner bending radius and outer bending radius of incremental in-plane bending are Rin=(t0)/tgαp and Rout=(t0-s)/tgαp+W0 respectively under full contact condition; The minimal outer bending radius and minimal inner bending radius are Routmin=t0w0/s and Rinmin= t0w0/s-w0 respectively when punch inclined angle is critical.(2) The effect of punch inclined angleαp, strip thickness t0, punch indentation s, strip width w0 and pitch p on strip inner bending radius, Rin, outer circumferential strainε11, outer thickness strainε22, width strainε33 and total equivalent plastic strain is researched systematically by FEM method. Conclusions which have some guiding significance to practical production are drawn.(3) It shows that using FEM simulation to research incremental in-plane bending process is easy to accomplish with credible results and it is an effective method. The achievements of this study can supply theoretical foundation and production guidance for the generalization of In-plane bending process under unequal compressing, and they have some reference significance to the research and development of other advanced plastic processing technologies.
