The insulating ceramics SiO2 is wearable, heat-resistant and insulated, all kind of electromagnetic waves pass easily. It's a material become more and more popular in some kinds of fields such as military industry. However, such kind of material not only is very hard, but also is crisp. So the shaped machining is very difficult, especially machining the workpiece with complex figure. Today, the EDM technique which considered could be only machining conductive material had applied in machining insulating ceramics and obtained important result through a lot of tests.This paper discusses the developing and using actuality of the insulating ceramics in and out of our country, summarizes the applying machining methods for machining ceramics at present. According to the theory of machining insulating ceramics by way of assisting electrode EDM(AE-EDM), It also advances a new machining method named electromagnetic-powder EDM(EMP-EDM)of insulated ceramics. And then study the feasibility of electrical discharge machining insulated ceramics SiO2 by use of conductive film. The influences of different electrode material and electrical parameters on the result of the machining insulating ceramics SiO2 have been studied.The tests shows that insulating ceramics SiO2 covered with conductive film could be machined by use of assisting electrode.
