Abstract/Summary:
The typical regions of the Yangtze valley including Changzhou of Jiangsu Province, Yichang of Hubei Province and Chengdu of Sichuan Province were selected as the main study area in May and June, 2004, we carried out aircraft observation on gasous pollutants (SO2, NO, NO2,O3 and CO) and atmospheric particulate matters (PM10 and PM2.5), and the field observation was combined with ground measurement, through which we study the present air pollution situation, the temporal and spatial distribution of the main air pollutants, evolutive tend and its affect factors. Analysis of the observation results shows there are air pollution to some extent in the three typical research areas of the Yangtze valley; air pollutants show the pronounced vertical distribution characteristic, i.e. air pollutants concentrations decrease as altitudes go high in vertical direction; it is likely that SO2 and NOx come from same sources, most of them likely come from stationary source emissions. Fine particles play important role in airborne aerosols, atmospheric particulate matters generally appear to be acidic to different degrees, accelerating acidification of atmosphere; organic carbon concentration is very high in the atmosphere particles of the Yangtze valley; sulfate ion (SO42-) and sulfur element (S) concentrations are very high in particles, which indicates that coal burning contributes a lot to atmospheric particulate matters in the Yangtze valley, the type of pollution in the Yangtze valley is mainly coal smoke pollution.
