Electromagnetic riveting is a new kind of technology that is based on electromagnetic forming and traditional riveting technologies. In this paper, the analytic model of the process of electromagnetic riveting has been established, and the process of riveting has been simulated by ANSYS software. The correctness of analysis results has been proved by corresponding experiments in the end.The electromagnetic field has been simulated from ANSYS/Multiphysics. The simulation results indicate that the magnetic field has several characteristics: the first is the pressure acted on sheet metal is chiefly axial pressure deviating form flat spiral coil, and radial pressure is very small compared with it. So it can be neglected; The second is there is pressure along the whole thickness of sheet metal and the pressure decreases gradually from the side near the flat spiral coil to the other; The third is distribution of the pressure is non-uniform along the direction of radius. The tendency is decided by both the structure of coil and relative size of sheet metal and coil. The plastic kinetic process of rivet is analyzed through sequential couple method which takes the first step's results as initial conditions. The process of forming and changing of plastic elements is simulated by ANSYS/LS-DYNA solver. The forming characteristics of different rivets under different riveting dies have been analyzed, the effect factors have been discussed, and the shear stresses in different rivets have been simulated.Proper processing parameters for different conditions have been found through experiments. The relationships between the qualities of rivets and riveting voltages have been discussed, the effects of different riveting dies on rivets have been studied, and the microscopic structures of different have been analyzed. These experiments have proved the results of the numerical simulation.
