Abstract/Summary:
This thesis presents the studies on synthesis and characterization of novel water-soluble conjugated polymers. The solvent and surfactant-dependent aggregation behaviors of these water-soluble conjugated polymers and their photoelectrical properties have been studied. These water-soluble conjugated polymers are also used for DNA detection. The main conclusions are as follows:1. An anionic water-soluble PPE derivative (PPE-SO3Na) has been synthesized and characterization. The solvent-dependent aggregation behaviors of the anionic poly(phenylene ethynylene) in different polar solvent were studied and used to tune optical properties and quenching efficiency.2. The surfactant-dependent aggregation behaviors of the anionic polymer PPE-SO3Na have been studied and used to tune their optical properties and quenching efficiency.3. A series of novel water-soluble, cationic dendronized conjugated polymers have been synthesized through a Suzuki coupling reaction. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis shows the weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of the dendronized polymers are in the range of from 38 to 65 kg/mol. The obtained polymer is well soluble in aqueous solution due to the substituted amine-groups attached to the exterior of dendronized polymers. The solvent-dependent aggregation behaviors of these dendronized polymers were studied UV-vis and FL spectroscopy.4. A lab-free DNA sensor is designed, which takes advantage of the FRET from conjugated polymers to EB interacted into ds-DNA.
