To obtain a nanocomposite, the inorganic clay must be modified with some organic surfactant, which replaces the inorganic cation and makes the gallery space of the clay sufficiently organophilic. In this work, nickle(â…¡) ion exchanged montmorillonite was prepared from reaction of Na-montmorillonite and Ni2+ ion exchange resin heating under water bath or microwave radiation. Organic amine ligand was introduced into the interlayer of Ni-montmorillionite. Organic amine/ montmorillionite nanocomposite was prepared.Powder X-ray diffraction was used to monitor the d spacing of the Na-montmorillionite, Ni-montmorillionite and Organic amine/ montmorillionite. The results showed that the d spacing increased obviously after nickle(â…¡) ion was introduced into the interlayer of montmorillonite. The spacing increased again when organic amine ligand was introduced. FT-IR results indicated that organic amine/ montmorillionite nanocomposite exhibited N-H and C-H vibrations which were not shown by parent montmorillionite. UV-vis diffuse reflection spectra results showed that absorb bands shifted to shorter wavelength after organic amine ligand was introduced into the interlayer of montmorillonite. The thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses results showed that the quantity of the water molecules in the interlayer of organic amine/ montmorillionite was smaller than that of Na-montmorillionite and Ni-montmorillionite. Organic amine/ montmorillionite exhibited new bands which were not shown by parent montmorillionite. These results showed that there was coordination compound in the interlayer of organic amine/ montmorillionite nanocomposite.
