3,5-xylenol is an important medical intermediate. Aromatization of isophorone to3,5-xylenol was studied in this thesis. Different home-made catalysts, including supported metaloxide catalyst and solid base catalyst, were tested for aromatization of isophorone using fixed bedreactor under atmospheric pressure and different reaction conditions. The catalyst samples werecharacterized by XPS, XRD and TPD respectively.Alumina-supported K2O(2wt%)-promoted Cr2O3 loading 15wt% catalyst was found to bepreferred in aromatization of isophorone under the reaction condition of 550°C reactiontemperature, 1.5h-1 liquid hourly space velocity.MgO sample, which was obtained by the in-situ calcination at 600°C in nitrogen atmosphere, was found to be preferred in aromatization of isophorone under the condition of 560°C reactiontemperature, 1.5h-1 liquid hourly space velocity. In addition, the reaction products were isolated and purified, and 3,5-xylenol with highpurity was obtained. The reaction network and reaction mechanism were speculated.
