The underground pipeline has been considered as the most reliable, economicaland effective way to convey energy resource. It has been widely used to transferpetroleum all over the world. However, with the increase of quantity and using-timeof the pipeline, many problems evoked. Firstly, because of more and more pipelinesintersect underground, it becomes very difficult to perambulate. Secondly, the leakageof underground pipeline may cause a series of serious problems, such as loss ofenergy and money, pollution of the environment and even danger to life. The reasonsof leakage mainly include two aspects. One is the eroding of the soil and other naturalfactors, the other is people stealing and destroying. So it is urgent to find a method todetect underground pipeline and its branches conveniently.In order to solve the above problem, based on the fact that the heated petroleumradiates heat to the soil and then the especial temperature distribution will be formedon the ground, this paper reach out a method creatively using the infrared imaging todetect the underground pipeline. The main work is as follows:1). Established an mathematic model of the temperature distribution of theground above the underground pipeline, and demonstrated the feasibility of theinfrared imaging method to detect underground pipeline.2). Developed an instrument named "infrared pipeline detector" which isspecially designed to detect the underground petroleum pipeline, including hardwareand software design.3). Reach out two new data revising methods named "two point revising method"and "one point revising method" to revise the original infrared image data. Itimproves the quality of the infrared image greatly.The detection experiment in Dagang Oilfield has shown that this "infraredpipeline detector" can be used to perambulate underground pipeline and findstealing branch easily. Moreover, this instrument works steadily and can be easilycontrolled.
