For the deeply development and widely using of laser, the traditional protective materials based on the linear theory replaced gradually by the late-model protective materials based on the nonlinear theory. Phthalocyanines(Pc) and metallophthalocyanines(MPc) have gained considerable interest for their optical limiting properties in the visible and infrared band. Recently, doping Pc and MPc with special photoelectric properties into the inorganic matrix to fabricate a solid-state system and implementation has been widely studied. This paper reported the development, prospect and problems of optical limiting materials on the basis of the non-linear theory. Typical different kinds of MPc were successfully introduced into inorganic matrix to produce composites by sol-gel technique. The exciting state and structure of doped MPc was studied by Infrared Spectra, X-ray Diffraction, Transmission Electronic Microscope, Scanning Electronic Microscope and UV/Vis absorption spectra. The effects of central metal ions, substitutional group and dope concentration on the existing of MPc in DMF solution and composites have been analyzed. The optical limiting mechanics of MPc in composites was studied by excited absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, optical limiting and Z-scan experiment. Several important results are obtained. The results show that MPc does not affect the component and structure of silica xerogel matrix and the matrix prove to be homogeneously non-crystal structure. The central metal ions, substitutional group and concentration have different effects to the existing state of MPc in composites owing to their different ability of electron donating and space hindrance. The composites show good optical limiting properties. The optical limiting mechanics of MPc in the solid atate composites is nonlinear scattering related to the size of particles which differ from the mechanics in DMF solution.
