Under the circumstances that our country is short of water resources, lack of water resources by water pollution also threatened the safety of fetching water and drinking water. This paper which was part of the research project named the development of water quality forecasting and pre-warning system of digital Xijiang River discussed the methods of river quality estimation. Based on the integration of water quality modeling and GIS technology, water quality calculation and results evaluation for parts of Xijiang River was conducted, and the modeling results was visualized in the system. Furthermore, lots of significant conclusions were achieved in many aspects, such as the framework of water quaiity forecasting and pre-warning system, the integration of system and establishment of database, which would be of great importance in application of water quality forecasting and pre-warning system of river.This paper was composed of five parts and the main works were summarized as follows:Part one: This chapter briefly introduced the development of water quality mathematical model, the application of GIS technology and the integration of GIS technology and water quality modeling at home and aboard. The importance of research on water quality forecasting and pre-warning system was analyzed. Some brief introduction was made of the catchment which the river lay in, the software of GIS and the river numerical technique.Part two: By the characteristics of Xijiang River, the methods of river quality estimation were introduced in detail and applied to the evaluation of existing data about water quaiity.Part three: The theory and the solution of one dimension and two dimension water quality modeling based on GIS technology were introduced, and this mathematical model was applied to the water quality calculation forparts of Xijiang River. The results were evaluated by the methods presented in chapter two and were illustrated by graphs, at the same time, the representation of these results in water quality forecasting and pre-warning system of digital Xijiang River was also described by pictures.Part four: The component parts and C/S(Client/Server) integration technique of digital water environment management system and digital water quality forecasting and pre-warning system were introduced, especially, the establishing technique of the spatial database and non-spatial database in these systems was introduced in detail, and the relational database was used to manage the spatial database and non-spatial database.Part five: Some suggestions on the future research were pointed out on the basis of the summarization to the whole paper.
