Preventing fire is the eternal subject of keeping human society safe. In last several decades many fires of the world were caused by polymeric materials, so many countries paid much attention to flame retardation of polymeric materials and realized that using flame retardant polymeric materials was a grand act which would affect "environment and human being". Textiles, a kind of polymeric material, are used extensively in our life and combustible, therefore, it is significant to do flame retardant treatment on textiles. This thesis is about the flame retardation of wool and soybean protein fibre, which consists of three sections.First of all, the flame retardation of fibre and textiles was reviewed, and then the purpose and significance of this paper were summarized.Secondly, wool was treated with a flame retardant synergistic system, which was composed of titanium tetrachloride, ammonium bifluoride and dicarboxylic acid. Pure wool and treated wool were both studied by Thermal Analysis, FTIR, Limiting Oxygen Index, Char Yield and SEM. The results indicated that the flame retardant property of treated wool was much better than that of pure wool.Thirdly, soybean protein fibre was treated with several flame retardant systems: TBPA-dicarboxylic acid system, hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and ammonium primary/second phosphate-ammonium halide system. The flame retardant and thermal properties of treated soybean protein fibre were studied by Limiting Oxygen Index and Char Yield. The flame retardant mechanism was studied by Thermal Analysis and SEM. Compared with pure sample, the flame retardant property of treated soybean protein fibre was effectively improved.
