Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is serious pollutant in the earth's atmosphere in the sense that they are one of the main sources of acid rain. Directly reducing sulfur dioxide in exhaust gases to elemental over a catalyst is attractive, because it produces a salable product without any solid waste to dispose of. In this paper, the activity of the perovskite-type catalyst and transition metal oxides supported on ?-Al2O3 for reduction of SO2 by CO to element sulfur in O2 atmosphere was studied.The effect of O2 and the mix of oxide and sulfide was also systematically studied.We try to offer some helpful data to study and design catalyst on desulfuration. LaCoO3 is used in reduction of SO2 by CO.In this reaction , La2O2S and CoS2 are proved to be the active phases and they are useful for the reaction.If O2 exists,the catalyst will be deactive finally,because O2 will destroy the structure of the catalyst and the phases helpless for this reaction was formed.If we sulfurize the catalyst again,the catalyst may form La2O2S and CoS2 again,but the deactive time is shorter than the original catalyst.Increasment of volume of catalyst and temperature will helpful to the reaction. If there is no O2,the sulfide is better than the LaCoO3 catalyst in low temperature and the are same in high temperature.If O2 exists, LaCoO3's original activity is lower than the sulfide,because there are more La2O2S and CoS2 in catalyst,but it is easy to be deactive.Since the balance fo the reaction,after the raction,the sulfide's activity is lower than the LaCoO3's activity. Proved that the peroveskite-type is very important for the catalysts on reduction of SO2 by CO through the cativity contrast between perovskite-type catalyst and the transition metal oxides supported on ?-Al2O3.In the same candition,the perovskite-type catalyst',s activity is much better than the transition metal oxides supported on ?-Al2O3.It is also show that O2 not only can destroy sulfide active phase,but also can destroy the perovskite structure,and make catalyst deactive.
