The paper is written to harmonize marine engineering activities with marine geo-environment and avoid occurrence of geological hazards and damage of environment, as well as to provide reliable fundamental data for the exploitation and utilization of Jiaozhou Gulf.The paper is supported by the research project of "Evaluation of Geo-environment Quality and Ecological and Economical Sustained Development" of the Qingdao City. Many means are applied to gain detailed first-hand data, including shallow stratum profile and side sonar measurement, taking superficial soil samples and column soil samples, drilling in Quaternary strata, in-situ tests in seabed soil. Many years' engineering reconnaissance data of Qingdao Gulf of other scholars and our institute are also combined in this paper. It includes the following aspects of the Gulf: regional geology, topography and geomorphy, types and distribution of superficial sediments, regularities of distribution and engineering geological characteristics of Quaternary sediments, bedrock and its structure and existing major engineering geo-environmental problems.On the basis of study of types and regularities of distribution of the superficial sediments in the Gulf, the types of the sediments are classified, seafloor substrate type map of the Gulf and median tendency chart are compiled, and the spatial distributional characteristics of the superficial sediments are detected. According to the data of shallow stratum profiles and with the aid of latticed icepack map of the Quaternary sediments in the Gulf, distributional characteristics of depth of the sediments are exactly explained. From the engineering geological angle on the basis of their composition and physical and mechanical properties, the unconsolidated sediments of the Quaternary in the Gulf are classified into several basic engineering geological strata. Statistics are taken of physical and mechanical indexes of the strata, and evaluation is carried out on their engineering properties and expediency.
