Two kinds of wood species: Betula platyphylla and Pinus koraiensis, ten chip thicknesses: 0.5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, 4.5mm, 5mm and four different kinds of oblique angles of cutting edge for test tools: 0° ,10°, 20°, 30° are consisted in this test. We studied cutting forces and qualities of the sliced veneer used in the laminated veneer lumber in the 90-0 and 0-90 oblique cutting conditions. The result is that cutting forces and veneer quality are affected by veneer thickness and oblique angles of cutting edge.As for as the cutting forces: In the 90-0 cutting condition, the main cutting force and vertical component force are increased with the increasing veneer thickness when the veneer thickness is less than 3mm, the cutting force of Pinus koraiensis is decreased with the increasing oblique angles of cutting edge, but the cutting force of Betula platyphylla is not. In the 0-90 cutting condition, the main cutting force and vertical component force are increased with the increasing veneer thickness and decreased with the increasing oblique angles of cutting edge for both species. In comparison with the 90-0 cutting condition, the main cutting force is smaller in the 0-90 cutting condition, which ratio is 0.36 times when cutting Betula platyphylla and 0.56 times when cutting Pinus koraiensis. As for as veneer quality, the surface quality is better in the 0-90 cutting condition. The main cause which affect the surface quality is peeling split, wooly grain and torn grain in the 90-0 cutting condition and peeling split, end split, wooly grain and torn grain in the 0-90 cutting condition. The veneer quality of Betula platyphylla is better than Pinus koraiensis in the 0-90 cutting condition. The oblique angle of 20 is best in the 90-0 and 0-90 cutting conditions. The best cutting condition as follows: the oblique angle of 20 should be used. The thickness is less than 5 mm when cutting Betula platyphylla and less than 3 mm when cutting Pinus koraiensis in the 0-90 cutting condition. The thickness is less than 3.5 mm in the 90-0 cutting condition.
