Modern manufacture relies on advanced equipments more and more. So the maintenance which keeps the equipments running uninterruptedly is important. Reliability centered maintenance (RCM) is a method which determines the requirement for plant maintenance in the running condition to improve the maintenance system. It was paid widely attention by more and more enterprises because of it's advantages.The IDR production line is the first one of inland UO2 powder 'dry' production line. It's maintenance would affect the product quality, effectiveness, security and environment directly. Now many defaults is exist in the maintenance system because of lacking experiences, thus how to optimize the maintenance becomes important.This paper is about the RCM based maintenance optimization method and it's theory and technical foundation, including RCM theory, FMEA method, failure mechanism, and the affection of failure modes on maintenance decision-making. The application of RCM based maintenance optimization on IDR main facility has been discussed. By analyzing the function of IDR main facility and taking FMEA method as supporting technique, the primary failure modes of IDR main facility have been identified and the prevention measures of these failure modes have been discussed. Thus we can improve IDR's the prevention maintenance, the inspection, the prediction maintenance and breakdown maintenance. This is significant not only for the IDR production line but also for the all maintenance system. The chief achievements and feature of this paper are as follows: 1 According to the feature of RCM, a maintenance optimization method is presented which applies RCM to improve inspection, prevention maintenance, predictive maintenance, breakdown maintenance, to realize the optimization of maintenance system. The scope of the application of RCM is widened.2 The foundation of RCM has been discussed, especially the effects of the technical characters of failure modes on maintenance decision-making. The equipment reliability has been bridged to maintenance management by RCM.3 The method that describes system function by means of logic diagram and table has been laid out., and this makes the function analyzing easily.4 The Definition and the affect of function failure have been discussed .The table of failure modes has been established. Failure modes of IDR has been identified, and FMEA table on IDR has been completed. The affect and the cause for these failure modes have been discussed. A method has been found which takes FMEA as the supporting technique of RCM.5 The paper is not a summary for an existing maintenance plan, it is just to seek after the possibility and method of application of RCM on maintenance optimization.
