Polypropylene (PP) is a common plasitic with innoxious and lower price and has been applied largely in industry and human daily lives. However, PP has severe static danger in the process of producing or applying, which arising of its higher bulk resistivity and surface resistivity. In order to eliminate this static phenomena, the antistatic agents are often added to the plastic. In this paper, two antistatic agents were firstly synthesized by reacting dodecyl/octadecyl amine with epoxy ethane, i.e. polyoxyethylene dodecyl amine(HL-l) and polyoxyethylene octadecylamine(HL-2) .The effect of reaction temperature , reaction time , catalyst type and their concentrations on polymerization numbers of epoxy ethane were studied, and these two antistatic gents were characterized by IR. The results showed that while the hydrochloric acid was taken as catalyzer and 5% overweight was used after neutralized dodecyl/octadecyl amine, the reaction temperature and time was maintained 120℃ and 6h respectively, the average 2mol polymerization number of epoxy ethane was obtained. While hydrochloric acid was alternated by sodiumhydroxide and the reaction was carried out in the same conditions, the average 4.5mol polymerization number of epoxy ethane was attained. The synthesized products in the present work appeared a liquid state of ropy and yellow.Secondly, the anti-electrostatic properties of two antistatic agents HL-1 and HL-2 were investigated by determining the surface resistance of PP samples mixed with HL-1 or HL-2.PP samples were prepared by added HL-1 or HL-2 to it in different mass ratios and mixed-well and melted down in a round matrix at 180 ℃. The factors such as the mass ratios of antistatic agents to PP, the duration of samples, air relative humidity, temperature, anti-washing, surface roughness , material thickness were considerable in relation to their antistatic property to PP.The results indicated that: (1) when both the mass ratio of HL-1 and HL-2 to PP were 1.5%, the surface resistance values reduce about by 2~3 orders compared to the pure PP samples. Such good results proved that two synthesized antistatic agents posed a well antistatic property to PP. (2) The surface resistance of PP samples with antistatic agents dropped gradually before 20 days but kept constant after 30 days. (3) The air relative humidity has a great influence on the antistatic properties. The more the humidity, the lower the surface resistance. (4)When the temperature varied in the range of 20~50℃, the surface resistance decreased with the temperature increasing. (5)In the case of washing PP samples with antistatic agents and aired in the room temperature, the surface resistance of PP samples decreased firstly, and kept fixedness after 30 days.In addition, material thickness and surface roughness of the samples hada certain influence on the antistatic properties. In order to synthesize new type composite of antistatic agent which took on the properties of anti-electrostatic and flame-retardan, two new products with properties of anti-electrostatic and flame retardan, named poly(ethyleneoxide) dodecyl / octadecyl amide borate ester were synthesized through the esterified reaction of polyoxyethylene dodecyl amine and boric acid, and was characterized by IR, compared to PP samples without the flame-retardants, the fire-proofing tests of the flame-retardants with polypropylene indicated that the velocity of combustion was slower which decreased from 0.66mm/s to 0.15~0.18mm/s and they were good flame retardants.
