Chemistry is an experimental science and has cumulated many documents and data which have great reference and application value for chemistry and related areas. Due to some reasons each compound name is not always accompanied by its chemical structure formula in the abstracts collected by chemistry database. If we want to know the respective chemical structure formula of any compound, secondary retrieval is needed. This causes many inconveniences to scientific researchers.Naming an organic compound is very troublesome for its complicated structure. Meanwhile many organic compounds have various aliases. So many names are easy to cause confusion. Considering this situation, International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) defined a series of rules to standardize the naming of organic compounds. To link the compound's name to its structure is the most significant characteristic of IUPAC naming rule. When we know the structure of an organic compound, we can write out its name according to the rule. We can also write out its structure if we know the name.American Chemical Abstract is one of the six largest retrieval systems in the world. The compound naming rule used in Chemical Substance Index published by CA is developed based on IUPAC Systematic Organic Chemical Nomenclature. This rule adopted the principle of one name for one substance, which is able to not confuse the user during retrieving.Based on the analysis of rule of CA chemical index name, this thesis summarizes the characteristics of CA index name, discusses how to identify the field for structure in the index name and establishes respective identifying processes. Some experimental discussion on problems in chemical structure segment assembly is presented in the end. The innovation of this thesis, the concept of separating commas and fictitious group, simplify the rule of discerning. The analysis on CA chemical index name and the preliminary identifying method in this thesis will be a help to deeper researches on CA index names and further development of practical index name analysis method.There are five parts in this thesis. Chapter One introduces related research backgrounds. Chapter Two introduces the development of organic compound naming rules, characteristics of IUPAC naming rules and demonstrates with some compounds'names. Chapter Three explains the index types employed by CA and make preliminary analysis to the characteristics of index name in it. In Chapter Four naming rule of chemical substance index name is discussed in detail from view of identifying. Identifying logic together with respective identifying method is discussed from the systematic point of view. In Chapter Five application of identifying rules is demonstrated and discussed.
