| With the increase of urban population, more and more stress was put on cities. Therefore, construction of Eco-city is urgently necessary. However, lack of knowledge on theories and methodologies of Eco-city has limited its development. In this paper, the concepts, characteristics, development process and the model pattern of Eco-city are discussed. In addition, the concept of "Ecological Footprint" and the relevant calculation methodology are introduced and applied in our case study area-Dalian Development Zone (DDZ). This has enabled us having a better understand of the current ecological situation of DDZ. Finally a comparison of "ecological footprint indicators" among different cities is carried out. Results show that DDZ is in the stage unsustainable development. As water is a special material and considering the fact that water shortage is very serious in DDZ, we introduces the concept of "Virtual Water" for measuring the water flow in DDZ. It showes that DDZ relies much on water import from outside through importing different kinds of agriculture products. This implies a future tendency of reasonable economic development structure, that is: those enterprises with high water consumption should be out of consideration while planning for city economic development. Based on the calculation results of "ecological footprint" and "virtual water", we analyzes the factors which limited the development of DDZ, they are: ecological deficit, shortage of water resource, negative effects of economic fast development, and so on. Specially, an Eco-city development against DDZ is put forward in this paper. The development model should follow: Cleaner production→Eco-Industry→Recycle Economy. For specific enterprises, specific technical support is given. Finally, a evolution index system and the relevant evolution method are given, results show that in 2005, 2010 and 2015 the comprehensive indicators are respectively 0.425, 0.523 and 0.724, that is to say, DDZ is in the state of middle-level development in 2005 and 2010, and in 2015 DDZ is in the state of high-level development. |
