Fullerene with its unusual molecule structure has many interesting physical and chemical properties,it is believed that fullerene and its derivatives have much potential in inlight ,electricity, magnetism, medicinal chemistry and so on. So it has become a focus of intensive research. Fullerene has unique spherical shape with high load-bearing capacity, low surface energy and chemical stability, weak intermolecular and strong intramolecular bonding, which indicates that fullerene is promising in lubrication and biology. The synthesis of water-soluble fullerene derivatives has been one of the way of the chemical modification to fullerene and also have taken some special preponderance. Especially multi-hydroxy fullerene derivative-fullerols has become a basic molecule for polymer synthesis to form a series of new three-dimensional functional plumer materials because of its specific molecular structure. Besides, the middling affinity to electron has made it possible to act as free radical absorbent and water-soluble anti-oxgen agent in organism. In this paper,we take a very convenient and efficient method to synthesize a water-soluble fullerence derivative-fullerols by the reaction of fullerence with fuming H2SO4 and KNO3. The product has been characterized by the FTIR, 1H NMR,. RF and so on. A brief discussion about its solubility and RF phenomenon is also has been taken. The results showed that the product dissolved in water rapidly and very well. And its fluorescence intensity of the product depends on its concentration. A maximum value occurred at the concentration of 12.5×10-5 mol·l-1 which suggested that fullerols possess phenomenon of the concentration self-absoroption. Two novel water-solable fullerols polymer derivatives were also synthesized by free radicle polymeration. The products have been characterized with FTIR, UV, RF. With tranmission electron microscope(TEM), the morphology of the product particles in water were investigated. The TEM analysis showed that the particles present nano scale spherical appearnece with ventage in it ,which is considered as the result of the self-assabling of the molecules and hydrophobic effect. It is suggested that the copolymer may be Hydrophobicall associtating water-soluble polymer. Lubrication performance of the base stocks with fullerols polymer derivatives as water-based lubricant additive are studied with four ball tester and Inverted Research Metallurgical Microscope (IRMM). The conclusion is as follows:Firstly, Experiments indicated that the addition of the fullerols polymer derivatives in the base stock with 0.5% OPZ can raise the anti-wear performance and load-carrying capacity of the base stock greatly. The outcome varies with the content of the fullerols polymer derivatives. The excessive addition results in the poor lubrication performance.Secondly, the wear scan diameter(WSD) of addition of the fullerols polymers don't increase with time after 20-30 seconds. It is as results of strong hydrophobic effect and hydrogen bond .Thirdly, the addition of the polymer without fullerols also shows the improvement of the lubrication performance. But compared with fullerols polymer derivatives, the effective improvement is little. It is due to the absence of hard fullerols core in which is very important during lubrication. Additionally, fullerols also shows good potential application in biology. The experimental results of bioactivity show that the effect of which free radicles damage the film of red blood cell is obviously decreased. It is also observed that our products can restrain the influence of free radicles on aging. And the biological activities of those materials are under research.
