Examining the profile of a working roller between the intervals of rolling is called on-line testing for roller wear. After long time working, the surface of a roller will wear. And the roller wear will result in the difficult controlling of the shape and the thickness of the board. Further more it can lead to the decline of the product quality of a rolling mill. So it is very urgent for rolling mill to detect the roller wear exactly and real time. And also it is very important for improving the quality of the product and the productivity. In this paper, after summarizing the experience of the detecting methods of inside and outside we present a fiber-optic reflective displacement testing method. And this method offers the advantages of good accuracy, high sensitivity, immediate response, no electromagnetic interference, simplicity and non-contact. So it can detect in the atrocious condition on-line and examine roller wear precisely and real time. Accordingly changing roller and online roller grinding can be processed in good time. And also the quality of the product can be ensured. Through analyzing the principle of the reflective fiber-optic displacement method theoretically, the base of detecting roller wear is presented. Because of the reflected light intensity is direct proportion to distance between the probe and the reflected surface roller wear can be transited into displacement to be examined. And also the mathematic model is founded. By considering the characteristic of the system lamp-house and detector are designed cooperatively. And especially the optical fiber probe was designed in particularly. A novel fiber-optic sensor of three probes with equal transverse space is adopted. Using this sensor, effect of fluctuations in the light source, reflectivity changing of target surface and the intensity losses in the fiber lines are automatically compensated. In circuits designing and signal disposing we dissertate the zero and temperature excursion circuit, use pulse modulating circuit driving lamp-house to eliminate the interference of background light, present the photo-electrics conversion circuit and PSD circuit. And by introducing the data acquisition card, the data can be processed intellectualized. Experimental research of the optical fiber detecting system has been completed based on simulation. The feasibility is enhanced and also the results of experiments are shown in the end.
