Being the basic parts to transmit movements and forces, gear has been playing a very important role during the development of industry. Presently in the global industrialization and informationalization age, gear and its correlated technologies are still the hotspot of researches among the academe and enterprise of every country in the word.While being the crucial and indispensable; factor of gear technology, gear measurement technology has been emphasized in the development of it, and influences the advancement and improvement of it directly. Along with the development of sciences and technologies, every advanced technology, such as computer technology, laser technology, precise instrument technology, digital signal processing technology, image processing technology, etc., has been applied more widely and practically, which impels gear measurement technology to develop and improve rapidly.Furthermore, being the modern science and technology developed and improved only a few decades ago, the computer vision technology, which has a good many strongpoints including higher precision, more efficiency, faster speed and noncontact, etc., has been applied more and more widely in every engineering and technology field. The gear measurement technique has been always a very complex and time-consuming process, and it is needed to research and develop a new real-time and efficient measurement technology of it by linking to the latest high technologies. As a result, the application of computer vision technology in the gear measurement technology is researched and discussed intensively, and a new noncontact multifunctional measurement technique is attempted and studied.The main study work and results are just as followed:1) Researched and analyzed gear precision and its internal and international precision system, discussed the basic principles and main methods of gear measurement.2) Studied and analyzed the image processing techniques used in gear measurement in detail, furthermore, advanced and improved some of them considering the requirement of research.3) Researched and discussed the system theory framework, and analyzed the critical technology questions and the camera calibration techniques.4) Taking advantage of such strongpoints of the computer vision measurement, discussed the basic principles and realized methods on how to apply it to make gear measurement, and did some related experiments whose results improved the feasibility and reliability of the schemeBy the research, the computer vision technology has been applied into the gear measurement, and the corresponded computer vision measurement system (CVMS) has been attempted and analyzed. This measurement technique, with high measurement precision, high efficiency, simple operation and advanced multifunction, is a new kind of noncontact measurement technology having a bright development and application future, which will give a great impetus to the improvement and development of gear measurement and manufacture technology.
