The objective of this paper is to investigate the treating effects and operation status of the biological aerated filters filled with different media, domestic spherical bio-ceramic and import patent media BIOLITES, on treating secondary treatment effluent. Through the comparison between two biological aerated filters, whether domestic media could substitute for BIOLITES will be determined, which will provide the evidence for the practical application of domestic media for Biological Aerated Filter (BAF). At the same time, domestic media is just designed and applied in a BAF of 200,000m3/d in Shengyang Fairy River wastewater treating plant, and the technical performance of BAF in practical project is researched. In the lab test, the two filters have the same size and shape, except the different media. In the three same testing conditions with retention time of one hour, two hour, three hour respectively, three phase of contrasting tests were proceeded. During the testing time, NH3-N and COD values of effluent were measured regularly to compare the treating effect between the two media. The results obtained showed that the COD and NH3-N removal effects for treating secondary effluent were equivalent approximately between domestic spherical bio-ceramic and BIOLITES in this test, thus domestic media can substitute for the import media completely. Meanwhile, domestic spherical bio-ceramic has great advantage over BIOLITES in operation, such as long running cycle and easy backwashing, and so on. The test and practical application indicate that the substitution of domestic spherical bio-ceramic for BIOLITES is feasible and inevitable, which will promote the application and development of BAF in China.
