The prismatic-formed turning tool is a special tool, which has been widely used in a variety of lathes and automatic machining assembly lines. It can be applied to cut rotating-formed surfaces. It is well known that both the design precision and the efficiency of the traditional graphic/calculating methods are low. In recent years, the mutual CAD design systems have been developed. It replaces the curves with straight lines or arcs. However, there are still some shape errors by the use of this method and the parametric design technique has not been realized. In this thesis, a parametric design CAD system based on UG has been developed. A prismatic-formed turning tool with high accuracy realizes the zero error parametric design.This thesis establishes a module plan and a design flow chart of prismatic-formed turning tools on the basis of further investigations into parametric/feature modeling, UG-based further developing technique, prismatic-formed turning tools design theory, interface design, etc. This system is developed by the use of UG/Open MenuScript, UG/Open UIStyler, UG/Open API and Visual C ++6.0, which regards Windows system and UG as a platform.In addition, this paper presents two theories. One is zero error intersection, which eliminates the hyperbolic errors. The other is minimum radius control point, which successfully combines work-piece model, datum planes, swallow tail section as a whole by utilizing the parametric modeling method based on feature. Furthermore, cutting angle, parameters of structure dimension and additional edge of form tool are designed by the use of database technique. Importing swallow tail trough model method and getting structure data of database realize swallow tail trough model standardization, which simplifies the application program. The realization of dimension-driven function by means of system programming makes the detail drawings more useful/meaningful than traditional drawings.Moreover, this system realizes the integration of UG system, good man-machine interaction, expandability and portability. The interface of this developed software system is simple and easy to operate. Users could obtain three-dimensional automatic parametric design with high efficiency, onlyneed to substitute the old work piece with the new one each time, choose work piece material, form tool material, and input the mechanic properties of the work-piece material. The detail drawings of formed turning tool are transferred by NC wire EDM software. The NC program is then made to drive wire EDM machine tool to cut the tool profiles. Meanwhile, this developed design method for the system not only suits to prismatic-formed turning tools, but offer the UG-based further developing technique of other products as well.
