From an academic point of view, the research work on liquid crystals has been mainly focused on low molecular weight compounds and polymers. However, metal-containing liquid crystals have been opened up new possibilities on the design of liquid crystals recently as a consequence of the development of a new and emerging area of research in the field of liquid crystalline materials. Most of the metal-containing liquid crystals so far described are coordination compounds in which the organic ligand is bound to the metal atom through a heteroatom, and palladium is among the most versatile metals. The subjects our work involves are listed below:(1) Synthesis of a series of the liquid crystals of the low molecular weight.(2) Synthesis of side-chain liquid-crystalline polyacrylates. Their mesogenic properties have been studied by 'H-NMR, DSC and OPM. The terminal alkoxy as flexible spacer played an important role in mesogens.(3) Synthesis of Pd-coordinating, imine complexes liquid crystals. The data summarized by means of 'H-NMR, DSC and OPM indicated that the terminal alkoxy can exert anobvious influence on mesomorphic range and otherproperties.Studying the design, synthesis and chemical structure of low molecular liquid crystal (LC), liquid crystal polymer (LCP) and organometallic liquid crystal (LC) is of great importance in reclaiming a new functional materials field of liquid crystals. All we have done is meaningful to some extent.
