N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) is an important monomer for the synthesis of water-solubility polyvinylpyrrolidones (PVP).In this paper, N-vinylryrrolidone was prepared by dehydrating N-(P-hydroxyethyl)-2-pyrrolidone with two kinds of high surface areas compound catalysts of ZrO2/SnO2 . The two different structures of the catalysts referred to nanoparticle structure and mesopore structure. And the research of the synthesis of NVP based on the compound ZrO2/SnO2 was emphasized.Firstly, the process to synthesize N-(P-hydroxyethyl)-2-pyrrolidone (NHP) with y-butyrolactone and 2-aminoethanol was investigated. The main effect factors on the yield of NHP were studied, for example, the reaction temperature, the reaction time, the ratio of 2-aminoethanol/ y-butyrolactone, the vacuum of reaction. With the optimized operation conditions, the yield of NHP reached to 83% and its selectivity got to 93% based on y-butyrolactone. And the product was characterized by IR.Secondly, the synthesis of two different structural catalysts was also researched. By heating ZrOCl2 and SnCl4 solution with an alcohol-water mixture as solvent and with n-butanol as azeotropic solvent, the compound catalysts of ZrO2/SnO2 with 10~20nm size, monodispersed nanoparticles with spherical shape, were synthesized. The synthesis of the compound ZrO2/SnO2 with a mesostructured framework was achieved by use of CTAB. Nanoparticle ZrO2/SnO2 and mesoporous ZrO2/SnO2 with high surface areas were characterized by XRD , SEM and BET. The effect factors on the dehydrated progress of NHP were studied, such as reaction temperature, vacuum of reaction, volume of catalysts. As a result, the yield and the selectivity of NVP reached to 67 percent and 81 percent respectively under the controlled conditions and the conversion of NHP was 83 percent.
