With the fabric CAD's popularization in the textile industry field, the textile design and production has been made great progress opposing its former lagging status, and great economy and society benefits have been taken for textile industry. The designer would know the designing fabric's final effect during the designing forepart by simulating the fabric's appearance. This can get rid of the work of making small sample, increase the efficiency, save the manpower and material resources, and shorten the design period.Most of the existent fabric CAD systems have designed and simulated fabric in 2D environment, and use color blocks to represent the contexture points. These systems can not show the 3D effect of fabric's appearance, the simulation results can not replace the real fabric's appearance. On the other hand, the fabric CAD has not been combined with the garment design, so that the fabric designer can not sight the intuitional effects of the designed fabric which been made to costumes and been worn on the models.This paper is mainly on the study of the simulation of costume material and its showing in 3D environment. Firstly, the author analyzes the present researches, development trends and the problems about fabric CAD. Secondly, based on the research of the fabric's contexture characteristic, the author puts forward using the convex shape as yarn's section, builds the yarn's dimensional geometry model and axes equation of warp and weft. Establishes the illumination model which is fit for fabric with illumination theory. Thirdly, the author sets up the standard body and costume 3D models by the 3D modeling software in existence, analyzes the data makeup of the model, reads out the key data, puts forwards the topological structures of body and costume 3D models which are fit for showing costume material, redefines the data structures of models to control the key parameters which effect on the costume and it's material surface reality sense such as points, faces, the material of faces and illumination. Uses oc-tree structure to control the blanking andvisibility of the faces, rebuilds the model with OpenGL. Fourthly, the author reads the BMP and JPG image files as texture information, solves the key technologies about the generation of models' texture coordinates and the conversion from texture coordinates to device coordinates, solves the texture pattern's scaling and rotating with the texture mapping transform technology, solves the problem of the texture's losing shape in the course of mapping with Mip-map technology, simulates the environment lighting to light the model.By applying such design ideas, the author builds the 3D-based costume material exhibition system by VC++6.0, realizes the costume material's surface reality sense in the 2D and 3D environment.
