Facing fierce competitions, enterprises of manufacturing must keep on shortening the product development time as well as cutting down the cost so as to better adapt to the more diversified customer requirements. The development of Internet and information technologies provides chances of model changing for these enterprises on product development and administration. It is necessary to provide them a united supporting platform of product design resources , which can make these resources be shared through network and prepare for the future works of concurrent engineering , CIMS and even dynamic alliance .Taking engineering materials database as research project, incorporating development of modern database and distributed object technique while considering implementation environment of enterprise, the writer designed and developed a Web based database management system (DBMS) of engineering materials which can support different users of different departments to inquire and manager common material information simply by using web browsers. Main research and development work are:(1) After analysing the development trend of engineering material database management system, the EJB/J2EE technique is provided to realize the Web-basedengineering material database management system, which can be inquired and managed through network in the distributed > heterogeneous environment.(2) Incorporating the realization of system, the techniques concerned are introduced including Web database, EJB/J2EE distributed object technique and database design , while emphasizing the feasibility of incorporating EJB and CORBA.(3) Based upon Browser/Server model of Three-Tie structure, the function module framework of the system is established and each module is described. Also, the J2EE framework of the system is completed by adopting Model/View/Controller method which can clearly define its hierarchy structure.(4) The method of system realization is studied. Dynamic design idea is introduced during database designing process on the base of relational database theory so that the level of material is unlimited and its sub-material could be added unrestricted. Each function module is designed and realized in the form of EJB component ,while incorporating JSP and Servlet techniques which makes the material information be inquired and managed in the way of web browsing. Adaptability and openness of the system could be improved as the writer provides method of combining CORBA and EJB for distributed applications.
