Desulfuration by activated coke is one of new technologies of flue-gas-desulfuration, which has been developed in Japan and Germany, but is still in research in China. The principle of the desulfuration is that SO2 is firstly adsorped in the surface of activated coke, then catalytically oxidized to H2SO4 in the presence of H2O and O2 in flue gas. SO2 and H2SO4 can be obtained as the by-products by regeneration of activated coke by heating with steam or washing with water. The experiments on the addition of metal-oxide to activated coke were done to improve its desulfuration performance, and the addition of MnO2, Fe2O3, Cr2O3 has been examined. The results show that activated coke containing MnO2 has the highest desulfuration ratio . The experiments on the effect of temperature, space velocity, steam and regeneration on the desulfuration of activated coke was also examined with activated coke containing MnO2. The results show that desulfuration ratio changed with temprature and reached the highest value between 60C~80C, desulfuration ratio decreased with the increase of space velocity, steam in flue gas gave little effect on desulfuration, and regeneration of activated coke by water-washing had negative effect on it.
