UHMWPE is one of excellent plastic materials with comprehensive capabilities. It has ultra capabilities with high abrasion, impaction and anti-erosion so it can be applied extensively in coal mine and be known as one kind of new materials with publicizing value, but it must be fire-retardant and anti-static primarily if it need to be used under the coal ore.Plastics modified with fire-retardant have been the topic for recent years. Due to the realizition for enviroment protection, the non-halogen fire-retardant becomes the main trend. IFR(Intumescent Flame Ratardant) includes many advantages : 1.high fire-retardant ability , no melt drop action and best endurance to be exposed in fire ; 2. no halogen and oxide stibium; 3. low smoke, no poison,no erosion gas and so on. So,IFR overcomes basically many disadvantages of other traditional fire retardant technologies and could be called one revolution of fire retardant technology. The author gets the modeling UHMWPE direction(LOI is 28-40) with good dispersing and fire-retardant capabilities by adding IFR composed with APP(char source), MN(sour source) and PER(frothing source) under reasonable disposal and process technology . The math model could be established by applying SPSS and analyzing experiment datum while the best direction could be gotten by optimizing the model through MATLAB6.0. The mechanism for UHMWPE modified with IFR is discussed by TG: the effect is derived from the forming of intumescent char layer which makes the polymer insulated from heat and oxide and prevents burning gas phase entered by some ignitable gases resulted from polymer decomposition .So,its fire-retardant effect mainly belongs to agglomeration phase; some non-burning gases derived from APP,MN, such as NH3,H2O,etc, could transgress above the material surface, which dilute the concentration of burning gases. The form of intumestant char layer could depart polymer base and burning part while prevent heat transfer. Obviously,the fire –retardant effect of IFR is also that it intermits heat transfer.By adding carbon black,UHMWPE can be modified in anti-static capability and it can achieve standard when it is added 3% into polymer.Some innovations: (1) first modified UHMWPE with IFR successfully; (2) the UHMWPE/IFR/CB compound material has passed MT113-95 standard; (3) first optimized fire-retardant direction by SPSS;(4)analysize the theory of UHMWPE modified with IFR by TG..
