Production of sulfuric acid with gas containing hydrogen sulfide is introduced briefly, and the WSA process is intro-duced in detail. Meanwhile, three different wet contact acid processes are compared. This thesis focuses on the 60kt/a WSA plant which was imported by one oil refinery. The reactor is discussed and Pseudo-homogeneous one dimension model is developed for the simulation of sulfur dioxide adiabatic fixed bed reactor on the basis of the reaction engineering theory. Though the simplex method, estimation of the apparent pre-exponential factor and the catalyst's active correction coefficient with the S101 vanadium catalyst's kinetic equation and the original design data afforded by the factor. The mathematical model is calculated by using Runge-Kutta numerical solution method with the production practical data. The SO2 conversion and temperature distribution along the catalyst bed are obtained. The results match the known parameters well and prove the model is reliable.Based on the model, the reactor is simulated. The effects of operation condition on sulfur dioxide oxidation catalysis reaction such as the inlet temperature for each bed of reactor, gaseous flow rate and oxygen-sulfur dioxide ratio on SO2 conversion and outlet temperature are analyzed. The conversion increase with reducing amount of gaseous flow rate,or increasing of the oxygen-sulfur dioxide ratio. However, with one maximum conversion, the inlet temperature for each bed of the reactor has an optimum value. At the same time, Powell direct search method is selected to optimize the inlet temperature and to investigate maximum conversion for the purpose. The optimal inlet temperature of each catalyst bed is obtained.Secondly, process flow sheeting of the WSA has been carried out by sequential modular approach. Prior to the process flow sheeting, the establishment of models of units and the analysis of degrees of freedom have been done recording to the basic principle of chemical system engineering. The results of simulation are fairly in agreement with the engineering data. Finally, a set of GUI(Graphical User Interfaces) has been developed in the environment of MATLAB 6. With the friendly interface, the GUI was easy to be used. User can obtain the curve of SO2 conversion and temperature distribution along the catalyst bed only by using the mouse to select and appoint, and deepen comprehension for effects of the operation condition on reaction results.
