Polypropylene(PP) is one of the most active resin in modification field. Elastomer can improve the toughness of PP but decrease the reinforcement of PP. Inorganic filler can improve the rigidity of PP, but the effect of the toughness and reinforcement is not very conspicuous. Therefore, Elastomer and inorganic filler were used to improve the toughness and reinforcement of PP.In this paper, Magnesium Hydrate Whisker(M-HOS) and elastomer POE were introduced in the preparation of PP composite. The factors that effect on the structure and property of PP composites were investigated. In melt blending preparation, the filler's shape, particle size, content and the different methods of the interface modification were studied. The fillers include: M-HOS , magnesium sulfate and fine(1000,2500meshes).Coupling agent and Maleic anhydride grafted PP were used as compatibilizer for the PP composite. The effects of kind and amount of coupling agents and content of M-HOS and the different interface modifiers on properties of PP composites were studied. The result showed that different filler's shape and particle size result in different properties of PP composites, the mechanical property of PP composite reached the optimal value when the content of coupling agent was .0.1% and M-HOS was 10(g/100g/PP); Maleic anhydride grafted PP was better than coupling agent in modifying the interface between PP and filler.In-situ polymerization was applied to prepare polypropylene/magnesium hydrate whisker composite. The effect of calcining heat and calcining time on titanium-supporting was investigated. According to the requirement of experiment, the optimal pretreating condition were 600癈 and 36 hours. The morphologies of M-HOS in different phases were studied. The results showed that M-HOS was protected due to the reaction between M-HOS and main catalyst(TiCl4); the mechanical property of PP composite via in-situ polymerization were better than those via melt blending owning to the more better disperse of M-HOS in PP resin.HIMagnesium hydrate whisker(M-HOS) was used to reinforce polypropylene; POE was used to toughen polypropylene, coupling agent and Maleic anhydride grafted PP and anhydride grafted POE was used to modify the interface respectively, thus PP/M-HOS/POE composites were prepared and studied. The effect of M-HOS content and POE content and different interface modifiers on the mechanical properties of PP composite was investigated. Moreover, the mechanical properties and structure of the binary and ternary composites were studied. The results showed that there is the optimal content of magnesium hydrate whisker on modification of polypropylene; the rigidity of PP/POE composite were increased by M-HOS, showing the synergism effect of toughing and reinforcing on PP composite. Moreover, Maleic anhydride grafted PP combining with anhydride grafted POE had more effectiveness of modification than anhydride grafted PP on the mechanical property especially tensile strength of the ternary composites.
