With the rapid development of new techniques of steel making, strict demands on refractory are required. Al2O3-SiC composite is a promising material. This paper mainly studied the effects of Si and Al additives on the structure and properties of Al2O3-SiC composite. Plastic phase played an important role on the composite. The results show that the properties of Al2O3-SiC composite were improved when Si, Al were added. This paper is divided into four parts as follows:In the first part, the traditional refractory preparation method was adopted .The effects of SiC content on the microstructure and phase composition of Al2O3-SiC composite were studied by SEM, EDS and XRD. The results show that the framework of corundum was filled with SiC particles homogeneously. The structure was optimized by adding 8-12% SiC. Mullite was found in samples heated at 1400 C.In the second part, the effects of Si additive on the microstructure and phase composite of Al2O3-SiC-Si were studied. And the oxidation resistance was also researched. The results show that the properties of Al2O3-SiC composite were improved when Si was added. The apparent porosity of sample was decreased. The strength and the oxidation resistance of samples were improved. Residual Si was found in samples heated at 1400 C.In the third part, the effects of Al additives on the microstructure and properties of Al2O3-SiC composite were studied. The results show that the properties of Al2O3-SiC composite were improved when Al was added, and optimized by adding 18% Al.In the last part, the effect of Al and Si additives on the microstructure and properties of Al2O3-SiC composite were studied. The results show that the properties of Al2O3-SiC were optimized by adding Si, Al together. With 10% Al and 1% Si, the result was best.
