Network-based collaborative design is an important method for the realization of agile manufacturing and the promotion of enterprises' competition. This paper studies the process of the network-based collaborative design of the cams. The frame and method of the system are introduced. Based on the technologies of network and mechanical CAD, a system on which the collaborative design of the cams can be carried out is established.Then it proposed a solution to the computer-aided process planning of the workpiece of the automatic lathe on the basis of the analysis of several CAPP and special characteristics of the lathe.Afterwards, the influence of dynamic characteristic of the lathe and elastic distortion of the connecting rod on the precision of the cams is also analysed. According to the finite element technique, the optimization design of the connecting rod is put into practice.Finally, in order to solve the problem of the interface between the traditional calculation programs of CAD and the web browser, this paper demonstrates that ISAPI should be applied instead of CGI on it. In succession, the procedure of the interface is illustrated by an example of the remote calling of the cam outline calculation program.
