Coal shale is the byproduct in coal production course; along with coal output increase substantially, the quantity of coal shale also increase substantially. Piles of coal shale have initiated serious environmental problems, polluting the air, waters and soil etc. and being of radiation specific- ally. Therefore must pay attention to the handling of coal shale problem. At the present time, the comprehensive utilization for the coal shale include following aspects: using it for generating electric power, producing building materials such as backs and cements, getting chemical products and reclaiming useful minerals from thecoal shale, and using it as the filler of high polymers. There are different chemical constitutions and processing properties among coal shale for their different sources. So do their uses.In last few years, researchers have made great progress in using coal shale as the fillers of rubbers. The results of experiments showed that after processing, coal shale can be used as a good kind of filler in rubbers and showed notable economic benefits and social benefits. It is a kind of new channel of coal shale comprehensive use.In this research, I have discussed some basic physical and chemical natures of coal shale, especially the surface properties of coal shale powder and made some basic research about coal shale filler. Include specifically: carrying out industrial analysis and chemical composition analysis, using stereo-scan photograph to observe the structure and the shape of coal shale powder; making thergraphy and infrared spectrum analysis; determining the contacts and surface tension of coal shale powder in capillary rise experiments. In the application research, after ultra-fine grinding and surface modifying, we fill the coal shale powder into rubber. Then, we determining the bound rubber of un-vulcanized latex and the degree of cross linking and mechanical property of vulcanized latex and analyze granularity, surface properties and structural feature etc. We hope though these work we can raise the affectivity.Experiment results show: we should make full use of the coal shale according to its own structural and technology nature and the chemical composition. When used as rubber filler, coal shale with higher hydrophobicity is of better reinforcement affections. Theoretically speaking, the finer the coal shale is, the better the filler distributions in rubber is. However, the bound rubber experiments showed that if coal shale powders are too fine, they would gather and could not be used as good fillers. For some reasons, the relationship between coal shale powder's degree of cross linking and reinforcement is not clear.
