Mechanical alloying (MA) is a manufacturing technology of new materials. Many material scientists are interested in the high-energy induction and synthesis products by MA.The nanocrystalline TiC was synthesized by high-energy ball milling Ti-C system using a planetary ball mill machine under many different milling atmospheres. The accelerating effects of H2 and alloying elements Al, Ni or Fe and the effects of ball milling parameters on synthesis of Ti-C system by MA were studied by means of XRD, SEM, TEM , DTA and TG. Mechanisms of synthesizing TiC were discussed in details. The results indicate that H2 and alloying elements have accelerating effects on the synthesis of TiC during MA .The nanocrystalline TiC has good thermodynamic stabilization.Based on these results, the synthesis of TiC in Ti-petroleum coke system by MA was also studied, which is a beneficial exploration for cheap petroleum coke materials to be applied in a way of high additional value. These investigations will be beneficial effects on economics and society. The novel conclusions of submitted are mainly as follows:(1) The mechanism of catalysis acceleration effect of H2 on synthesis of n-TiC by MA in the Ti-C system has been found at first;(2) The accelerating effect of alloying elements on synthesis of n-TiC by MA has been studied at first;(3) The preliminary investigation on the synthesis of n-TiC using petroleum coke materials has been carried on, which is a promining application for cheap petroleum coke in a way of high additional value.
