Every year, substantial quantities of chromium-containing solid waste in the form of shavings and trimmings are generated during leather manufacturing. The main component of these wastes is collagen, which is a valuable natural resource, but they are not fully utilized now, they have become waste and heavily polluted the environment.From the point of the full utilization of resources and the elimination of pollution, this paper describes a study of the feasibility of synthesizing protein filling agent with hydrolysate protein from chrome shavings.Chrome shavings was digested with an alkali in the first step and with a protease in the second step, and the hydrolysate protein obtained in the last step. Then, the hydroysate protein was modified with formaldehyde, chromium salt and phenloic compounds separately. The better Conditions of modification were determined by a series of experiments.Some parameters for chemical modification of hydrolysate protein by formaldehyde such as dosage of formaldehyde, pH value and concentration of solution, reacting temperature and time were determined by studying the viscosity and chrome resistance durability of modified hydrolysate protein and the absorptance by hide powder. The factors for chemical modification of hydrolysate protein by chromium salt such as dosage of chromium salt, pH value, the reacting temperature and time were determined by studying the alkali resistance durability of modified hydrolysate protein and the absorptance by hide powder, DSC of hide powder. The conditions of modification by phenloic compounds were determined by studying FTU of reactive solution.Combined with the elementary characters of these modified hydrolysate protein, tanning experiments were performed on pigskins. The results of experiments show these modifiedhydrolysate protein have better filling properties.Conclusion, producing protein filling agent with chrome shavings would be a very good technique of recovering and reusing of hydrolysate protein from chrome shavings.
