Preparation of 2, 5-Dimethyl-4-Hydroxy-3 (2H)-Furanoneand its Green DesignABSTRACTFuranone has found wide use in the flavor industry. Due to the pollution of chemical industry, its environmentally conscious manufacturing is very important.In this paper, the synthetic methods of 2, 5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3 (2H)-furanone are summarized. The green technology of chemical process and the green chemical design are also reviewed.Based on the considerations of atom economy, selectivity and conversion of reaction routes, 10 principles are proposed for the green chemical design, and its block diagram is shown. A modified calculation method about atom economy and an A-factor are also described. The A-factor is used to measure the environmental impact quantitatively.Using the proposed A-factor, the synthetic route from methylglyoxal through intermediate 3, 4-dihydroxy-2, 5-dione to prepare furaneol is selected. The technical route has many advantages. The preparation included two parts: the preparation of intermediate and the preparation of product. By means of many experiments, the better reaction conditions and the corresponding unit operation conditions have been determined.On the basis of experimental results in the lab, the preparation processes including reaction, extraction, crystallization and recycling have been designed. A green conceptual flow chart is proposed, and is used in the pilot plant run and industrialization. The process shows good friendship to the environment, as well as good economy.
