An attractive feature of acrylic emulsion adhesives is that they are formulated from a wide variety of commercially available monomers and their properties are versatile. However, they all offer good transparency, heat resistance and weather resistance while bonding polyolefin films. So recently, more and more attention is paid to them. In this paper, a series of acrylic emulsion adhesives had been prepared by changing polymerization method, ratio of monomers, species and content of tackifiers. Adhesion properties were tested as well as emulsion properties such as viscosity of latex and average size of latex particles etc. The results showed that polymerization method had an important effect on properties of acrylic emulsion adhesives, and seed- polymerization was proved referable. The proper content of (N1-14)2S208 which was used as an initiator was about 0.5%. As the ratio of oft and tiff components in comonomers ranged from 1.35 to 3.9, peeling strength curve of the adhesive showed a peak. Similar situation occurred when the ratio of VAc and St increased and that of nBA and 2-EHA decreased. AA attributed to bond strength and stability of the system, but it worked conversely when beyond 6%. HEA functioned as surplus AA did when added to the reaction system with 6% AA. Of petroleum resin, terpene resin and rosin that were used to tackify acrylic adhesives, rosin was better than the others not only in bond strength but also in other properties of polymer emulsion. BOPP films were tore partly and entirely in the peeling-strength tests when the parts of rosin emulsion reached 40 and 50(that of acrylate emulsion was 100) respectively. It was proved that the system provided good adhesion to the BOPP films.
