The plant fiber filled polymer composites were prepared by blending polypropylene(PP) or acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) with wood fiber(WF). The compatibility of the polymers and WF was studied the mechanicl properties, crystallization and morphology of the composites.Three ways of modifications (alkali treatment, acetic anhydride treatment, boiling treatment) and compatibilizer were used and compared. The results show that alkali treatment and compatibilizer added has better effect on both composites, acetic anhydride treatment and boiling treatment showed a selective. SEM photos and DSC analysis revealed that the difference between modifications related to polymer crystallization. Further studies show that alkali treatment or boiling treatment and compatibilizer were both led to a synergy, tensile strength of PP/WF composite increased from 22.5 MPa to 53.0 MPa by using boiling water treatment and compatibilizer.Properties of Polymer/WF composites containing different WF contents were discussed. ABS/WF composite and PP/WF composite with different WF contents show different performence. Analysis revealed that the fracture mechanism of the two composites is not the same. The mechanism of the difference was explained in the view of crystallization. Additionally, mechanical properties of ABS/WF composite were improved by the fedding of ABS-g-mah and in-situ compatibilization. Tensile strength of ABS/WF composite increased from 24.8 MPa to 50.8 MPa, impact strength was 40% up, when ABS-g-mah added, the optimum dosage was 5phr. |
