It is a very important way to explore the formation and evolvement of quark-gluon plasma by studying the quarkonium production. The quarkonium suppression is thought to be a signal of the production of quark-gluon plasma. The yield and transverse momentum spectrum of charmonium production at RHIC(Relative Heavy Ion Collider) are studied to understand the mechanism of the charmonium production in collisions (how the cc becomes charmonium), and to check the universal of quark combination model. The charmonium production is calculated by developing the existed shandong quark combination model. The charm (anti-charm) quark transverse momentum spectrum is fixed by fitting the non-photonic electron's transverse momentum spectrum with experimental data. Then, the principle about how the cc becomes all kinds of charmonium is discussed. At last, we get the transverse momentum spectrum of all kinds of charmonium particles after considering the higher excited states'contribution. It shows that, in a self-consistent quark combination model, the calculated results is consistent with experimental data for the charmonium production at RHIC. These results maybe have a reference value to the LHC experiments in the future, especially to exploring the quark-gluon plasma.
