Naturalism idea of social science idea existed from ancient Greece. Aristotle advocated that using natural methods understood the knowledge of society, which reflected the path of naturalistic study. Sophisits claimed that human society was convention and has nothing to do with the nature, reflecting the path of anti-naturalistic study. They are prompting the advancement of social science. The naturalism takes significant progress, which have a profound impact on many fields such as philosophy, art, society and so on. This paper focuses on the origin, the character and the significance of naturalism in social science.Do natural science research methods can be applied to social science? The different answers for this problem form the natural and anti-naturalistic arguments in philosophy of social science. The naturalists confirm that the research methods of natural science can be applied to social sciences, that something society can be viewed as the natural thing to study, emphatically, take the explanation models of natural science, insist on the scientism stand and stick to the attitude of objectivity. However, since the sixties of the twentieth century, in social science the naturalism is not so strong, and is gradually digested and integrated by anti-naturalism. It constantly moves the progress of philosophy of social science. In the article the first stage introduces the historical origin, and then greatly analyzes theoretic characteristic, lastly expound study significance of the naturalism thought of social science. To make the reader more clearly understand the meaning of naturalism, the paper try to combine philosophy topics of social science with key figures of social scientists, and links the logical method to historical approach.In the social sciences, naturalism provides a platform to enrich social theory, for the emerging the flourishing situation of the social science theoretical schools. In the philosophy of science, it provides a new understanding method for traditional epistemology, which leads naturalized epistemology such as critique naturalism, normative naturalism, and so on. Whether naturalism is combined with philosophy or society, they both have used scientific methods to understand things. Because naturalism looks for the cognitive method ration from the science internal, it may ignore the scientific external factors such as cultural and historical factors that should have deserved the attention.Therefore, naturalism is continuously challenged.
