Place name updates is not only a necessary requirement that can maintain the current situation of place name database, but an important part of national fundamental geographic information update. It is the causes of place name changes and the analysis of laws which constitute the important basis of Place name update system and criterion. The author illustrates the place name database update contents, methods, causes of changes, change rules, etc. by the case study of 1:25million database. The main contents are as follows:1) The author first introduces the contents, organizational methods and update content of place name database, and then sums up update methods about ten types of place name and six kinds of data source in place name update.2) Nearest connection and SQL query which are the spatial analysis functions in ArcGIS were implied to analyze the changes of place name quantitatively, there for investigating time characteristics, spatial characteristics and property characteristics of geographical names database. This author compared the place name changes in the eastern, middle and western parts of the country, which demonstrates the close relationship between place name changes and economy development.3) On the basis of the analysis of the causes in place name data changes and laws, The Author proposed the update cycle of place name in all regions, by which technical circumstantial evidence can be offered for the maintenance or update of place name database. In addition, this technical line for place name update can be formulated according to the change rate of place name, providing some reference to the field of place name database studies.At last, The author summarizes the entire text and prospect the development trend of place name.
